Description

Immerse yourself in history at the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père. Located 10 km from downtown Rimouski (Bas-Saint-Laurent), our organism offers you a trip through its 3 attractions: the Empress of Ireland museum, the Onondaga submarine and the Pointe-au-Père lighthouse.

The Empress of Ireland Museum invites you to discover the Empress of Ireland liner and its terrible sinking in 1914, the greatest maritime tragedy in Canadian history. More than 300 objects recovered from the wreck testify to its past, from contemporary dives on the wreck to its construction in 1908. A show will immerse you in the atmosphere of its last voyage.

The Onondaga is the first publicly accessible submarine in Canada! Enter this 90-meter steel mastodon to discover the daily life of the 70 men who lived there confined for months. The audioguided tour inside the submarine will explain to you the various systems operating on board the submarine as well as their functions. An outdoor route on a tablet will even give you the opportunity to experience the main systems on board for yourself: torpedo launch, spotting a target, starting the engines, etc.

The Pointe-au-Père lighthouse is the second highest in the country (33m). Climb to the top of the tower and its 128 steps in a guided tour that will lead to a unique view of the St. Lawrence estuary. Visit the old station buildings which house several exhibits, including sound signals to warn ships
